Europe United's president calls for two-speed EU Constitution

Europe United's President Paasovaara urged on Tuesday the EU to consider the so-called "two-speed Europe" with the EU constitution.

"The creation of the 12-member eurozone and the borderless Schengen zone has proved the point. If we had waited for the agreement of 15 governments, there would be no euro today," noted the President.

He warned that governments should not try to force through a charter against people’s will. "The EU was established on the basis of consensus, trust and respect and that is how it should continue to succeed."

A total of 16 countries have already ratified the Constitution while France and the Netherland rejected the treaty in 2005. At the most recent EU summit, leaders agreed to extend the reflection period on the constitution for another two years, whilst continuing debate on the matter.
